Quality Monitoring Enhanced
Additional advantages from reduced down time to design modularity

Novelis monitors successful factory acceptance at the new ATZ (Achenbach Technology Center)
Last year Novelis awarded a contract to Achenbach SES to deliver two new flatness measuring rolls for the mills CM1 and CM2 in Fairmont, WV. The new rolls shall replace the old disk type rolls which were delivered by Achenbach in the late 80s and which both have reached the end of their life cycle. The challenge was to design a roll which fits both mills so that only one spare roll will be required. Achenbach has succeeded in doing this and now in total three UniFlat flatness measuring rolls having the same design will be delivered for both mills including two electronic systems for preprocessing of the measured values.
In the presence of Novelis, the factory acceptance tests took place successfully at the new ATZ in Germany as well as at the Achenbach SES facility in Alliance, OH. In the meantime the first two rolls arrived at Novelis in Fairmont on time. The installation and commissioning will be effected in close collaboration with the customer at a later date.
Top Down & Bottom Up Development
Key components for technological leadership in the field of complex and well-engineered production machinery
The Big Challenge
The big challenge for manufacturers of production facilities in the market for complex and technologically well-engineered production machinery such as rolling mills and foil slitting machines is to set the focus of their development work twofold: On the one hand it is the top-down technology innovation, red-hot now, to develop digital solutions for system networking according to the industry 4.0 paradigm which enable the customers very practically and in a tailor-made way to visualize and to optimize their complete production process.
The rush of incoming orders impressively proves Achenbach’s strategy to develop digital solutions on their IOT platform Achenbach OPTILINK® and to further extend their high com-petence on the level of single components, assemblies and functions and in addition a com-prehensive LifeCycle Support in the sense of manifold customer support throughout the entire lifetime of the machine by Achenbach as a reliable partner.
Muscle Shoals Rolling Mill Upgrade
LIGHT METAL AGE, AUGUST 2017
Constellium completed a modernization and automation upgrade of its three-stand cold strip rolling mill in Muscle Shoals, AL, which is currently used to produce beverage cans. The modernization was carried out by AchenbachSES, a new joint venture company created by Achenbach Buschhütten in Germany, and SES LLC in Alliance, OH, which recently entered into an agreement to deliver rolling and slitting machinery in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Rolling Mill Upgrade
The objective of the Constellium modernization project was to significantly improve the flatness of the rolled strip on its three-stand mill using electric discharge texturing (EDT) rolls and improved automation. These specialized work rolls will enable the Muscle Shoals operations to supply high precision strip. The characteristic feature of EDT strip is a lightly structured surface that allows for the high quality application of paint required by the automotive industry.
Achenbach-SES combines the technology and know-how from both companies. Achenbach Buschhütten is a family owned company with more than 100 years of mechanical engineering experience. It is renowned as a modern system provider of foil rolling mills and its associated auxiliary systems for aluminum and its alloys, as well as being a pioneer in foil slitting machines for metals and diverse compound materials.
